This is my first foray into urban fantasy and I’m really enjoying it. I’m working on a novella that is set in Salem, Massachusetts. You couldn’t ask for a place richer in supernatural potential, and that works great for the stories I’ve got rattling in my head these days.
The joy of a real world setting is that I can investigate a new town, learn about historic places (which I love) and just extrapolate from there. The characters get to interact and become part of a real setting, and the setting gets to become a rich part of the story arc.
Beyond just the real world setting, getting to know the place and the people adds a richness to the existing characters and inspires new characters.
